This is special because...
Unlike block printing, wherein a pattern is applied to a fabric, the ornamentation on these blankets are actually negative space - the base color of the woven cotton - that emerges as the result of a resist-dyeing process. Using a mud paste or wax, the designs are applied to the textile, which is then dipped in dye. Once dried, the paste is removed, exposing the bold white motifs.
